KwaZulu-Natal police say a man killed in a gun battle with officials in KwaMaphumulo, north of Durban, was found to have illegally possessed a firearm.
Authorities acted on intelligence about the suspect, who'd been driving around the Maphumulo CBD on Sunday.
KZN SAPS spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says the vehicle was later found parked along the road at Okhalweni.
" When police approached the vehicle, they found two passengers inside the vehicle, and the driver was nowhere to be found. When the driver came back, he noticed the police at his vehicle and turned back.

"Police gave chase, and the suspect opened fire towards the police. In self-defence, police returned fire, and during the shootout, the suspect was fatally wounded.
"He was found in the position of a firearm whose cell number was erased. No officer was injured during the shootout."
