Student protests to continue
Updated | By Zongile Mthimkhulu
Students at Wits University and the University of Cape Town say a nationwide mass march will go ahead tomorrow, despite the Higher Education Minister's announcement this afternoon that next year's tuition fees will be capped at 6%.
They are promising a total shutdown of institutions. Students at Wits, UCT, Rhodes and Stellenbosch have been demonstrating over proposed fee increases, with those from Fort Hare and the University of Pretoria saying they will join the protests tomorrow.
Addressing media in Cape Town earlier after announcing the 6% cap Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande encouraged institutional representatives to work to end the protests and immediately resume classes.
He has set up a task team to urgently look into the matter.
"A task team of all stakeholders will be immediately initiated with the view to provide a report on the establishment of a more sustainable fee regime that also recognises the importance of input variables such as the university subsidy from government and higher education cost drivers," he said.
