Striking Clover workers to target embassies on 'day of action'
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Disgruntled employees at food and beverages giant Clover are gearing up for an International Day of Action.
Protests over wage cuts and retrenchments are set to intensify on Thursday.
The dairy workers, who downed tools 10 weeks ago, are also upset about several factory closures in the country and say over 1 600 workers are on the verge of losing their jobs.
Several labour organisations are teaming up to pile pressure on the company.
They plan on demonstrating on Thursday at the embassies of countries that sell Clover products.
"We believe if we intensify now and we want to intensify more internationally and locally and make sure that the product of Clover are boycotted and people are now heeding to the call,” says Charles Phahla, who is with the General Industries Workers Union of South Africa.
"On Friday, we are meeting with government and also the CEO of Clover. We believe that this is a liberation of Black people, not only in South Africa but in Africa and the whole world."
