Stricter laws can eradicate illegal firearms: Gun Free SA
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Gun Free South Africa says it supports any amendments to the Firearms Control Act that will allow for the removal of illegal firearms from the country.
National Hawks boss Mthandazo Ntlemeza said that he had received a submission that the Act should be amended so anyone convicted of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm should receive a life sentence.
Gun Free SA says any changes that reduce the movement of firearms into the illegal pool are welcome.
Spokesperson Clair Taylor feels tighter controls over licensed guns are required, saying most illegal firearms were once above board.
"The Firearms Control Act is due to be amended next year and one of the key principles that Gun Free South Africa would support is addressing the problem of illegal firearms in this country and that will be for a number of reasons, mostly that you cannot trace illegal firearms," she said.
