The event is where the new DA leader will be chosen.

The top spot is between Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Sedibeng Caucus leader Sibusiso Dyonase.

It was under Steenhuisen’s leadership that the party joined the Government of National Unity after the 2024 elections.

As the outgoing leader, he says he's leaving the party in a stronger, larger, and more influential position.

"We are no longer a regional party or a perpetual opposition. We are national force for reform, a party in government that is already making South Africa better."

Helen Zille vows clean leadership

DA Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille says the party will ensure the congress elects leadership that isn't compromised.

The veteran isn't seeking re-election at the conference, focusing instead on becoming the next mayor of Johannesburg.

Zille says the leaders elected this weekend will take the party to new a dimension.

"We contest leadership openly and fairly. No one's going to be bought, no money's going to exchange hands for a vote, not even a box of chocolates.

"So, we contest openly and fairly. We elect leaders peacefully without bribery, without coercion, without threats. We debate policy in good faith."
