Loadshedding was activated at 12-noon. As it stands, the power supply is expected to return to normal at 10pm.

"As a result of increased generation plant being out for planned maintenance and unplanned outages, Stage 1 rotational loadshedding will be implemented from 12:00 until 22:00 today," Eskom said in a statement on its official website.

"Stage One rotational loadshedding requires 1000MW to be loadshed nation-wide. Loadshedding is conducted as a measure of last resort to protect the power system from a total collapse or blackout," it continued.

Newswatch reporter, Jarryd Subroyen spoke to Eskom's Dikatso Mothae a little earlier. You can listen to the interview below:

Eskom is encouraging residents and businesses to use electricity sparingly to ease demand.

"Please switch off geysers as well as all non-essential lighting and electricity appliances to assist in reducing demand," said Eskom.

Officials say they will provide regular updates on the status of the power system through all the media platforms.
