South Africa's marriage laws are under the spotlight

Affairs is considering expanding the three pieces of legislation that currently
recognise the union.
At the moment, people can wed under the popular Marriage Act, Customary Marriages Act and Civil Union Bill.

The department's Siya Qoza said: "Even with all of those three marriage rituals, we still have people who are excluded for example Muslims and Jewish people marriages are not recognised.”
He said the department will embark on a nationwide drive to hear about the changes that need to be made.
"We are looking for a way in which we can recognise all marriages. We are going to consult cultural leaders as well, those consultations will take place next month."
