GDP increased by 3.1 percent.

Statistician General Risenga Maluleke says mining and quarrying was the largest contributors to the GDP figure.

Meanwhile, Maluleke would not comment on the impact of current events unfolding in South Africa could have on the country's economy.

"What we do is measure what is happening from the side of the economy, we don't worry ourselves too much about political developments," said Maluleke.

"If you look at the sectors of the economy, as in services, finance, trade and transport, it is not easy to measure the behaviour of political developments."

He said it is not the work of Stats SA to measure political developments.

"We do not measure impact, we only measure outcomes."

The figures released by Stats SA this morning reveal that South Africa avoided slipping into recession for a second time in two years.

The economy shrunk by 3.2 percent in the first quarter, with many analysts pointing fingers at a major bout of loadshedding.
