South Africa records over 55 000 active Covid cases

The number of Covid-19 active cases in South Africa has increased to 55 973.
In his latest report, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize confirms another 5 361 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours.
Gauteng has 465 668 cases and accounts for 27,7% of the country’s Covid-19 cases.
This brings the country’s total identified infections to 1 680 373. A further 54 people succumbed to Covid-19.

Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and North West recorded no new fatalities.
“Eastern Cape 4, Free State 12, Gauteng 17, Kwa-Zulu Natal 4, Northern Cape 3 and Western Cape 14.
"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased patients,” reads the statement.
The country’s death toll now stands at 56 765. The national recovery rate slipped to 93,3%.
On the vaccine front, 1 193 352 Covid-19 vaccines have been administered.
