University of the Western Cape students not writing their exams have been requested to vacate the residences by Thursday, the institution has said.
This is to allow for necessary repairs, maintenance, safety and health issues which were severely compromised during protest action, UWC spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo confirmed.
In a communique sent to students living on the campus residences, those with logistical difficulties were told they could approach UWC’s residential services for assistance.
Exams for all non-final year students have been cancelled, the letter confirmed, but final year students residing on campus could also approach the university’s helpline for alternative accommodation.
Earlier, Cape Peninsula University of Technology students were instructed to vacate its residences after weeks of violent student protests.
Vice Chancellor Dr Prins Nevhutalu in a statement urged students to vacate by 16:00 on Wednesday to move out if immediate plans could not be arranged.
