Sindiso Magaqa murder trial postponed
Updated | By Bulletin and Newswatch
Sbonelo Myeza, Mbulelo Mpofana and Zweliphansi Skhosana appeared in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday.
The murder trial relating to former African National Congress Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa has been postponed to next month.
Accused face murder and justice obstruction charges
The three accused appeared in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday.
Sbonelo Myeza, Mbulelo Mpofana and Zweliphansi Skhosana face charges including murder and defeating the ends of justice.
Magaqa was shot during an attack in uMzimkhulu in July 2017 and later died in hospital.
State raises concern over delays as key witnesses die
State prosecutor Elvis Gcweka criticised one of the accused, former uMzimkhulu municipal manager Skhosana, for the delay after changing his legal counsel.
Gcweka says four witnesses have died while others are still in witness protection after six years.
He says the State is ready to proceed.
“Games are being played here by accused number three Mr Skhosana. He is going to go back to the uMzimkhulu Magistrates’ Court and he is going to say there are delays in the matter. We need the matter to start this year.”
Skhosana was previously arrested in 2018 alongside the late mayor of the Umzimkhulu Local Municipality and a hitman.
Skhosana was re-arrested by the SAPS Political Task Team in Malvern, south of Durban, in July 2025.
He is the former municipal manager of the southern KZN municipality.
Last Friday, MP Fadiel Adams was granted bail by the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court.
Adams is accused of interfering in the investigation into the murder Magaqa.
Magistrate Gwendolyn Robinson has set his bail at R10 000 with strict conditions.
“ You are not to communicate with witnesses for the prosecution, namely members of the South African Police Services, whether it be the political task team members or other members, the members of the Durban Metro Police Services, employees of the Department of Correctional Services, and as I've indicated, the members of the PKTT unit. You are to report in person to the charge office at Mitchells Plain Police Station.”
The matter has been remanded to 14 August.
