The taxi which had been transporting 20 people landed on the railway track after plunging down an embankment on Monday.

The wreckage was then struck by a train. Sixteen people were killed.

Transport officials have confirmed that the taxi did not stop at a stop street

Speaking at a memorial service in Groutville yesterday, Prasa's Zama Nomnganga urged motorists to be alert and respect the rules of the road.

''We had the train driver and a trainee driver who was also part of this incident and they're currently receiving assistance from our side because they have to go through counselling as this ordeal was not expecting.

''We're just praying that they will both be able to drive the trains again and continue with the excellent job they have been doing,'' he said.

Meanwhile, the family of 36-year-old Bongi Ngcobo attended the service.

Her aunt, Lena Ntuli says it is a painful time for them.

''What's most painful is that her children will grow up without their mother. She never wanted them to suffer and now they are. Bongi also took care of her mother who is a pensioner,'' she said.
