Cosatu wants sexual assault perpetrators to be listed

Cosatu in KwaZulu-Natal says it will support the establishment of a sex offenders’ list for teachers.

This in the wake of this week's news that abuse is on the rise in the province's schools.

Speaking at a press briefing in Durban earlier, provincial secretary Edwin Mkhize said the federation believes sexual offenders at all work places need to be dealt with.

"For us as Cosatu - any initiative that seeks to address challenges of sexual harassment at the workplace or issues of gender-based violence at the workplace - those initiatives must be supported. But it cannot just be limited to only one sector. It must be across all sectors. Everybody involved must face the music," he said.

Cosatu has also announced a protected strike this Thursday when workers across sectors will march on the Premier's Office in Pietermaritzburg.

They say it's over a number of issues facing the working class - including high levels of unemployment and retrenchments.
