Severe weather leaves trail of destruction in KZN

The inclement weather affected six out of 11 districts in KZN on Tuesday, with Ugu District being the worst hit.

KwaZulu-Natal's Cooperative Governance MEC Thulasiswe Buthulezi says the Umdoni and Umzumbe Local Municipalities and the Umgungundlovu District are other municipalities affected.

 

It's where strong winds damaged several homes and schools. 

 

"In Umuziwabantu Municipality under Ugu District, strong winds and hailstorms damaged 47 households, affecting 277 people. A total of 50 structures were totally destroyed, while 29 were partially damaged. Fourteen people were left homeless. Three injuries were reported due to structural collapse.

“In Mooi Mpofana Local Municipality, also in Umgungundlovu, 28 households were left roofless after strong winds damaged their homes. Our dedicated teams responded swiftly, providing disaster relief in the form of blankets, plastic sheeting, food parcels, and sponges. 


“Several incidents have also been reported under King Cetshwayo District, in areas such as uMlalazi, eMthonjaneni, and uMhlathuze. Teams have been deployed to these areas to gather information and provide immediate assistance as per our disaster response plan.

 

"Our teams are currently on the ground conducting assessments to determine the extent of the damage. We will provide further updates once the interim report is consolidated."

 

He's confirmed that no fatalities have been reported thus far.
