Seven days left until International Aids Conference
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo says the country is home to the largest concentration of people living with HIV worldwide.
Dhlomo has been speaking at the launch of the seven day countdown at KwaMuhle Museum in Durban.
He says this year's conference offers a chance to reflect on the progress made in terms of prevention, access to treatment and eliminating stigma associated with HIV and Aids.
"We are doing well on treatment but we must stop new infections. To hear that there are South Africans every week getting infected with HIV is not a good story to tell.
"This needs society, young girls and women - our targets with these issues. That is our main process and focus with this build-up of activities until the day we have the conference," he said.
