Durban security guard shoots and kills housebreaker

The close shave for the Marshall Security reaction officer left him with cuts and bruises, while the alleged housebreaker was declared dead at the scene last night.
According to a statement released by Marshall, an armed suspect lunged at the security guard, who had responded to an alarm activation in Umgeni Park.
“The armed suspect was shot in self-defence. Our reaction officer’s bulletproof vest luckily protected him from serious injury. He was examined by Netcare911 and treated for cuts and abrasions,” he said.
“The reaction officer had arrived at the house in Hillbrow Road after receiving the alert from our control room. The premises had been broken into on previous occasions.”
“When our officer spotted a suspect on the property he called for back-up. He entered the premises via the garage and came upon three suspects who were cornered in an alleyway alongside the house,” the statement read.
“This was when one of the men lunged at our officer with a knife, stabbing at his chest multiple times. In self-defence our officer drew his firearm and shot three rounds at the suspects.
“Two of the men fled the scene, with one jumping over a back wall into a bushy area leaving a blood trail in his wake. The third one was deceased.”
The men had gained access to the property by removing a window pane. A number of items - including a plasma TV and an X-Box - were found outside the premises where the incident took place.
“It is believed the suspects are responsible for numerous housebreakings and house robberies in the Wedgewood and Umgeni Park area.”
