Second multi-million rand drug bust in one week
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
A man is facing drug-related charges after he was caught with heroin with an estimated street value of R58 million at the Lebombo border post.
SARS's Sandile Memela says customs officials made the discovery after stopping a car coming into South Africa from Mozambique to inspect it.
"It was soon found that it had 58 bags of a white substance that turned out to be heroin. This was hidden within panels of the vehicle and the suspects, heroin, vehicle were handed over to the South African Police Services," he said.
He says it's the second major drugs bust in the country this week.
"On Sunday, we also confiscated mandrax worth over R78-million that was being smuggled into the country. SARS customs officials are very proud of us taking the fight from the criminals to protect the borders of our country," he said.
