Five miners entered an abandoned shaft at the Kloof Ikamva Mine - the bodies of four workers have since been recovered.

Last month, two mine workers were found dead at the Kloof mine following a rockfall believed to have been caused by a seismic event.

Managing company, Sibanye Stillwater says the miners had yesterday entered an abandoned working area. The circumstances surrounding their task are not known.

Specialised teams have been working for hours to locate the remaining worker.

"As the NUM, we are concerned about the number of mining incidents there. We're calling on the Mineral Resources Minister, Gwede Mantashe and his inspectorate team [to intervene]. What are the investigations saying? We continue to see these fatalities and nothing has been done. We say the Minister and team must act hard,"  mineworkers union NUM's Livhuwani Mammburu said.

Mining operations have been suspended while investigations are underway into the cause of the deaths.
