Scottburgh beach closed after shark threat

The KZN Sharks Board says the carcass of a humpback whale which has caused a feeding frenzy for sharks and other marine species off the south coast has now drifted towards the Park Rynie area.

Great white Sharks, Zambezis and tiger sharks were reportedly attracted to the area by the 14-metre carcass.

According to the KZN Sharks Board, beaches in Scottburgh had been closed off to swimmers.

The board's Mike Anderson-Reade says the carcass was towed in shore and anchored off the area.

"We found that the slick was going towards Scottburgh. The Sharks Board's interest is in bather protection. We took the nets out at Scottburgh and in the interim, bathing is banned at Scottburgh. The gear has been removed," he said.
