SATAWU steers clear of national truck strike
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) has distanced itself from reports of a planned national strike in the trucking sector expected to take place on Tuesday.
It's understood the strike is called by a group of South African truck drivers who are calling on companies to remove foreign drivers and employ locals.
SATAWU's Jack Mazibuko says organisers of the strike are the same ones who mobilised last years - which saw government intervene.
Mazibuko believes frustrations may be centred around the slowed pace of investigations into the hiring of foreign nationals further disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Now that the rules are a bit relaxed as far as COVID-19 is concerned, we will try to push the Department of Labour to get hold of the council, to make sure that they finalise the investigation in order to give a proper report to the relevant structures.
"But, as things stand now, SATAWU is not part of the strike and we want to tell all our members that they must not participate in this strike," says Mazibuko.
