Sassa clamping down on illegal deductions on accounts.

The South African Social Security Agency says it's taken legal action against two of its financial services providers for allowing deductions on the accounts of grant beneficiaries to continue.

It says as of this year new regulations have meant that it's now illegal for any deductions to take place in grant recipient's accounts.

Sassa's Kgomoco Diseko says yesterday Sassa opened a case with police against Cash Payment Services and Grindrod Bank following communication urging them to stop facilitating debit order activities with the two allegedly refusing to do so.

He says they were then left with no choice but to take action against them.

"We are hoping that this matter will go to court because we have been inundated throughout our history since 2012 with this type problem and we want to put them behind us. I think it will not just be a victory for Sassa but a victory for each and every beneficiary who has suffered the impact of this deduction, most of whom are unauthorised by the beneficiaries themselves," he said.
