Sassa CEO apologises for long queues in KZN

The South African Social Security Agency has apologised for the long queues at its offices in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Social Development Department and its entities held a briefing on plans to tackle several challenges.
Sassa CEO Busisiwe Memela says she's saddened by the level of overcrowding at branches.
At one office this week, a grant recipient died.
"I also want to express sadness about what actually happened in Durban yesterday. That clients were in the queue and there was a fatality that happened."
She says the post office is busy investigating the incident, "So we can understand as to what it is that we need to do to make sure that these things don't happen," adds Memela.
The department was summoned to account before Parliament’s Social Development portfolio committee - following last Friday's incident in the Western Cape where police used water cannon on beneficiaries - to enforce social distancing.
Memela says this matter is also under investigation.
