SASSA card alleged booze purchase sparks probe
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The SA Social Security Agency says it is investigating complaints that a woman was photographed allegedly misusing her SASSA card.
A photo of the woman apparently paying for alcohol with the card has been widely shared on social media. The agency’s Sandy Godlwana says this is not the first time they have received reports of beneficiaries misusing the grant.
She says the grant is meant to help people like the elderly and children living in poverty.
"We are calling on social grant beneficiaries to not misuse their grants such as for purchasing liquor, paying for hairdressers, purchasing beauty products and other luxuries", she said.
"This undermines government's war against poverty. We are encouraged by people who see this happening and report the fraudulent activity", Godlwana said.
