You have until the 15th of December to apply for a gold card.

It was designed to minimise illegal deductions, such as airtime purchases, electricity top-ups and unwanted loans.

The post office's Nobuhle Njapha says it also gives recipients one free cash withdrawal per month and unlimited free swipes at all retailers.

She said the application process is an easy one.

"Go to the post office, show your ID and take your old card with you and you will be issued with the new card," she said.

And for those who cannot go in themselves, Njapha says there is help available to them.

"We have made arrangements for people who are disabled and sick, who cannot go through the process themselves. Their relatives can call the SASSA offices to arrange for a home visit."
