Sasol's offshore drilling in KZN sparks protest
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Activists say the poor are often overlooked when it comes to environmental issues that impact their lives.
On Thursday, communities in parts of KwaZulu-Natal protested offshore drilling in the province.
Sasol has been given the green light by government to explore for hydrocarbon off our coast.
Fisherman Riaz Khan says fisherfolk are already seeing the effects of environmental destruction.
"They haven't been catching their normal fish that they use to. The fish that use to come in abundance does not come anymore.
"What is happening with Sasol is totally unacceptable. Minister Barbara Creecy needs to look at this and the mineral resources.
"We as KZN subsistence fisher folk forum object to whatever government is doing. This drilling has been affecting the sea life tremendously, this cases major distribution to the entire eco-system."
