SA’s complex financial system a target for cyber-attacks, says expert

Tech and cyber security company Mimecast says South Africa’s complex financial system makes it a prime target for hackers.

According to the South African Banking Risk Information Centre, there was a 22% increase in cyber-attacks in South Africa last year.

Heino Gevers, Mimecast's Senior Director for Technical Support, says South Africans are prime targets for attacks like ransomware, malware, insider threats, and phishing.
“The standard email, SMS, collaboration tools that we use every day such as teams and slack, social media platforms of course all of them seemingly millions of people using everyday of course.
“Highly sophisticated deep fakes videos…that obviously get generated through artificial intelligence seem very legitimate but they are not. So, I think as a departure point, be very mindful of what communication channels you use and, of course, within those communication channels, don't just assume it’s facts."
