Sardines netted off Toti, south of Durban

The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board says
sea temperatures and predator activity have pushed shoals of sardines further
north along the province’s coastline.
The fish were netted at several
eThekwini beaches, including Amanzimtoti, Warner Beach and Winklespruit, south
of Durban today.
The latest activity sparked another
frenzy among those who follow the annual sardine run.
The board’s Greg Thompson says
Durban could be in for some of its own action in the coming days.
“There have been reports [of
sardines] from Pennington right through to Amanzimtoti and there is still a lot
of fish behind the backline if you do get down to these beaches where the
activity is now,” he said.
“It is alive, there are pockets of
fish everywhere, there have been dolphins. I haven’t seen any sharks, but if
bathing is banned by the lifeguards, it is banned for a reason. Please just
listen to them.”
Those who are going to be swimming or surfing along the province’s coastline are being urged to check whether shark safety gear has been removed from the water at specific beaches as a result of the sardine activity.
