This after the Sanitary Dignity Programme was officially launched in Durban yesterday. The launch was led by the Minister of the Department of Women, Bathabile Dlamini, in the Durban CBD. The department says the programme is of particular importance in KZN due to high levels of poverty in rural communities.

The towels will be rolled out in government schools. There are also plans for them to be made available at other outlets like clinics.

The department's Shalen Gajadhar says they do not want girls to miss out on school because they do not have sanitary products.

"This is exciting for KZN because the province has a high number of poor communities with a high number of girls who are unable to manage their menstrual cycle and thereby missing out on schooling", he said.

"Menstrual cycle is still considered a taboo and a topic not easily discussed in this province", Gajadhar said.
