SAMA: Budget not enough to address healthcare challenges
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The South African Medical Association says the budget
allocated for the health sector will not be enough to address persisting
challenges.
During his budget speech last week, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced an additional R28.9 billion to keep around 9 000 healthcare workers in clinics and hospitals.
But SAMA's Mvuyisi Mzukwa believes provinces should prioritise these funds to hire more doctors to ease the workload on overburdened professionals.

"Every cent meant for healthcare must go where it’s needed. Expand and upgrade healthcare facilities, especially in rural areas. Invest in training and retention to stop the mass exodus of healthcare workers.
“SAMA will closely monitor implementation of the allocated advance while advocating for urgent healthcare system reforms before it’s too late.”
