Safety key focus ahead of Reed Dance

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture says the safety of maidens will be a top priority at this year's Umkhosi WoMhlanga.
The annual Reed Dance takes place at the eNyokeni Royal Palace in Nongoma in norther KwaZulu-Natal this coming weekend.

More than 45-thousand maidens are expected to be part of the annual celebration.The department's Phathisa Mfuyo says their main concern is transportation for the maidens.
A few weeks ago, several young women died in a horrific crash while returning from one of the events that formed part of the build up to the Reed Dance.
"Transport has been secured from various municipalities to ensure that the maidens are transported safely for the celebrations," said Mfuyo.

She says all vehicles used for transporting maidens will be checked to ensure they are safe and roadworthy.Show's Stories
