Updated | By Newswatch
KZN Cooperative Governance MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has issued a safety alert for communities living near Nagle Dam.
Umngeni-Uthukela Water is preparing to release water during a flood gate test on Wednesday morning, after heavy rains over the weekend caused the dam to overflow.
The released water will enter uMngeni River leading to levels rising higher than normal.
The utility says two-hour test will run from 10 o'clock in the morning.
There are concerns the process could trigger localised flooding.
KZN Cogta is urging communities near Nagle Dam to be extra vigilant and move their belongings, and livestock away from riverbanks.
Residents, who are likely to be affected, include those living along the Msunduzi River in Mkhambathini and KwaXimba, all the way down to eThekwini.
