Sadtu leads national march to Basic Education Dept
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Around 10 000 education employees across all provinces - including KZN - are expected to take part in a mass march to the Basic Education Department today.
This is the second march organised by union SADTU this month.
Last week, teachers held a demonstration in the Durban CBD against unfilled posts, the delayed transfer of funds to schools and the poor running of the schools nutrition programme - among other things.
SADTU's Nomusa Cembi explains today's mass protest is part of the union's call for certain changes to come into effect within the TVET and higher education sector.
"One of the most important issues is pay progression disparity that exists amongst teachers and the rest of public service employees. Teachers continue to receive 1% pay progression while other public servants receive 1.5%. We are also embarking to the Department of Higher Education over their failure to recognise Sadtu as a union in the higher education sector," he says.
