SADC tourists boost SA's international travel

Statistics South Africa says despite the Covid-19 blow to the travel and tourism industries, the county's seen a healthy number of international visitors arrive in recent months.

It's been collecting data and tracking movement at major airports - like Durban's King Shaka International - since the hard lockdown came to an end last year, and cross-border tourism was given the green light again.

Stats SA's Tshawro Gae says in March this year, more than 635 000 cross-border movements were recorded. 


He says the majority of visitors were from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) regions, other parts of Africa and abroad. 


"We have a lot of movement between South Africa and SADC - which makes sense because they are closest.

"We had a lot of tourist from SADC 86.6 percent and 11.1 percent from overseas and 2.1 percent from other African countries."
