SA registers 17 000 new coronavirus cases

More than 17 400 new infections have been picked up in the last 24 hour period.
The number of active cases has shot up to over 2 000 again.
"The institute reports 17 489 new COVID-19 cases that have been identified in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2 236 805. This increase represents a 31.0% positivity rate," National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said.

"The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (46%), followed by Western Cape (17%). Limpopo accounted for 10%; North West accounted for 9%; Mpumalanga accounted for 7%; Eastern Cape accounted for 5%; Free State accounted for 3%; KwaZulu-Natal and Northern Cape accounted for 2% of today’s new cases."
Over 450 more people have died after they contracted coronavirus.
This brings the pandemic death toll to 65 595.
