SA records lowest COVID-19 deaths since start of the third wave

South Africa has recorded the lowest COVID-19 related fatalities in more than three months, when the third wave started gripping the country.
An additional 58 Covid-19 related deaths were reported on Sunday, taking the total fatalities in South Africa to 86 174.
The country has maintained a significant downward trend during the first week in which lockdown regulations were eased to Adjusted Level 2.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says 2 281 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in the last 24 hours leading up to Sunday evening.
This brings the total Covid-19 cases to 2 882 630.
The institute says the daily positivity rate also continued to show a downward trend, standing at 7.4%.
KwaZulu-Natal is still the epicentre with 518 new cases, followed by the Western Cape which recorded 390 new cases.

“The majority of new cases today are from KwaZulu-Natal (23%), followed by Western Cape (17%). Northern Cape and Eastern Cape accounted for 14% each; Gauteng Province accounted for 10%; Free State accounted for 9%; Mpumalanga accounted for 6%; North West accounted for 5%, and Limpopo accounted for 1% of today’s new cases,” said the NICD in a statement.
There was an increase of 79 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, with 8 742 people currently admitted in both public and private facilities.
On the vaccine front, 17 598 Covid-19 vaccines were administered on Sunday.
