SA must intervene in Zimbabwe crisis: human rights group

Zimbabweans in South Africa are calling on the government to help resolve the economic crisis back in their home country.

Dewa Mavhinga, who's with the NGO, Human Rights Watch, says politics aside, now is the time for urgent intervention.

"We are appealing to South Africa, President Ramaphosa, SADC leaders and the African Union - to intervene and talk sense to Zimbabwean authorities. We need an immediate restoration of the rule of law and respect for human rights and the restoration of social media and internet services without further delays."

Violent protests triggered by the government's decision to double the fuel price this week - have claimed at least five lives.

This brings a litre of petrol in Zim to the equivalent of around R46.

After a day of calm on Tuesday, demonstrators took to the streets again yesterday after the arrest of well-known activist, Evan Mawarire, who called on people to stay away from work.
