Millions globally have commemorated World Cancer Day today.

According to the Association, at least 90% of cancers are caused by lifestyle and environmental factors such as smoking, diet and exercise.

Mandisa Mthembu who works within the Tough Living with Cancer (TLC) Programme in Durban says it's not only crucial to offer support to those affected but to also monitor lifestyle patterns.

"This year we are running the ' I can, We can'  campaign. You can as an individual give support for example to people with cancer, pledge to live a healthier life to lessen your chances of getting cancer.

"Also, it's a pledge that can be made by individuals, a group of people, as well as corporates to fight cancer," she said.

Mthembu says it also seeks to challenge stereotypes as to who is most exposed to the illness. Anyone can be a victim, she states.

Below, is a video posted by World Cancer Research UK, sharing tips on what to do to lessen the risk of developing cancer.
