SA jazz musician, Ray Phiri dies at 70

South African jazz legend, Ray Phiri has died at the age of 70.

The musician who was recently admitted to a hospital in Nelspruit had been battling lung cancer. 

According to family spokesperson, Paul Nkanyane, Phiri passed away in the early hours of this morning. 

Born in Mpumalanga in 1947, Phiri became a founding member of The Cannibals in the 1970s. The musician went on to become the lead vocalist of afro-fusion band Stimela.

He is the recipient of the Order of Ikhamanga - an accolade awarded by the President for his role in social transformation and in the arts.
