As Bafana Bafana gear up for their World Cup opener against Mexico on Thursday night, a young South African football fan is also preparing for the world stage.

Ten-year-old Luca Human-Maré from Johannesburg was selected as one of FIFA's ball carriers for the tournament.

Mum says Luca loves soccer

His mother, Liani Maré, says he was chosen through a Kia South Africa competition to go to the United States.

She says they’ll be jetting off to America on Monday.

"After practice, a half an hour later, he would put on his boots again and go into the garden and practise.

“So, I think we see the dedication and we see the dream. All we can do [is] support it and make sure he has everything he needs to keep going.

"We will then be in Atlanta for four days. The big game, the one where Bafana Bafana plays against the Czech Republic is in Atlanta on 18 June."

Luca thrilled ahead of FIFA World Cup adventure

Luca says he's excited to travel with his mom and be part of something he loves.

He says it felt amazing being chosen as a ball carrier.

"I made a lot of different videos like skills, dancing, shooting, celebrations and dancing and lots of more. It's like an opportunity of a part of my dream, and it's just like amazing to meet players and be there as a match ball carrier. And I'm very proud of myself to represent South Africa, Bafana Bafana [and] sing the national anthem.

"It's just amazing. Let's go Bafana Bafana!"
