Road safety strategy needs to be revised: Parliament Committee

Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Transport says it seems the country's road safety strategy - needs to be reviewed and improved.

The chairperson has been commenting on the release of the preliminary road stats for the festive season.

1600 road deaths were recorded, nationally. KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number of fatalities at 328.  

Dikeledi Magadzi says the figures are increasing year-on-year at an alarming rate.

"We are not happy about the strategies that the department has been carrying. Let's up the game so that no unroadworthy vehicle should be on our roads," Magadzi said. 

But at the end of the day, it's up to the person behind the wheel.

"You can't speed. We need to have a change of attitudes and behaviours by South African drivers," Magadzi said.
