About 12 000 cyclists, including some international participants, have made their way to KwaZulu-Natal today for the Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic.

The event is the oldest classic cycle race in the country and sees riders tackling routes between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

The main event, the 106km race started at the Maritzburg City Hall. Cyclists will cross the finish line at Suncoast Casino on the Durban beachfront.

Amashova’s Annie Batchelder says motorists need to be aware of a number of road closures in Durban.

"The cycle race goes along the M13 and at 45th Cutting [the route] then goes down Jan Smuts Highway - now King Cetshwayo Highway - towards the N3."

"From there they will take the outbound highway on the N3 into town. They go down Pine Street - now Monty Naicker Road - and turn left into Walnut Road. Once they've passed the Hilton Hotel, they'll ride contraflow all the way past the cricket stadium to Moses Mabhida Stadium where they'll ride into Suncoast Casino," she said.
