Road closures remain in Durban CBD due to mall fire
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Several roads in Durban central remain closed following the days-long firefighting effort at China Mall.
Emergency teams were continuing to dampen down hotspots at the complex on Dr Pixley KaSeme Street on Tuesday.
Thirteen people were treated for various injuries when the blaze broke out five days ago, apparently in a generator room on the first floor.
"Anton Lembede, that is former Smith Street, traffic is diverted upon Park Street and Alexander Street,” said eThekwini metro police spokesperson, Parboo Sewpersad.
"M4 southern freeway traffic is diverted upon Anton Lembede towards Warwick Avenue. Brook Street remains closed between Anton Lembede and Pixley KaSeme street."
Meanwhile, eThekwini's Environmental Health Department is urging people who live in the CBD, on the Berea, Musgrave, Congela, Glenwood, Wilsons Wharf and Maydon Wharf to please take precautions.
People have been asked to keep your windows closed as they could be affected by fumes and smoke for a few days.
