With fuel prices expected to skyrocket next month, the question on everyone's minds is how will consumers be expected to cope?

A debt review group says now's not the time to hike prices at the pumps, warning the impact will be dire for the average South African.

The Automobile Association (AA) says the petrol price could shoot by up 99c a litre in November.

Diesel and illuminating paraffin could jump by an eye-watering R1,42 a litre.

The AA's been commenting on unaudited fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund.

Debt Rescue's Neil Roets says salary increases can't keep up with these consumer demands.

"We can definitely not afford any petrol price increases because of the fact that this filters through to the price of other goods and services as well and the situation is dire at the moment.

"Consumers really do need some sort of or some form of relief and it's also very important for people to make sure that they budget, especially during these times, to make sure that they plan for these unforeseen circumstances."
