Respected judge passes away aged 81

The Presidency has confirmed that retired Judge Essa Moosa has died at the age of 81.
"We have learned with sadness the passing of one for the country's renowned human rights activists and former Judge of the Supreme Court, Honourable Judge Moosa. His passing is an enormous loss to South Africa of one our seasoned human rights activists. We wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to Moosa family and relatives, our prayers and thoughts are with them during this difficult period. May his soul rest in peace," says President Jacob Zuma.
Moosa will be laid to rest on Sunday at 16h00 at his family home in Rondebosch, Cape Town.
Moosa was born in 1936 in District Six, Cape Town. He qualified as a Human Rights lawyer and was admitted by the High Court of the Supreme Court of South Africa in 1962 and practiced until 1995.
He became the director of the Planning Unit in the Department of Justice in 1996. He served until 1997 and which produced what was known as Justice Vision 2000.
In 1998, President Nelson Mandela appointed Moosa as the judge of the High Court of the Supreme Court based in Cape Town. He officially retired in 2011.
During the apartheid era, he challenged human rights violations such as detention without trial, freedom of association, expression and movement.
He acted on behalf of leading anti-apartheid political and community activists who were detained without trial.
Zuma says Moosa will be remembered for his immense contribution in promoting and protecting his tenure as Supreme Court Judge as well as the founding and Executive Member of the National Association of Democratic Lawyers, where he chaired its Human Rights Committee.
