uMlalazi Local Municipality says efforts are continuing to assist families who've been displaced by severe storms. More than 190 households were affected and 51 houses destroyed last week. Several municipal facilities and infrastructure assets were also damaged during the storm.

The municipality says the storms claimed the life of a 24-year-old man who died when his house collapsed on him. Municipal Manager Njabulo Shandu says displaced families have been seeking shelter with their neighbours while relief efforts continue.

“Currently, the municipality is finalising the comprehensive report which will be submitted to relevant stakeholders, including NGOs and government departments to facilitate the coordinated intervention.

We have received the notification from the National Department of Human Settlement that upon receipt of the signed report, which will be sent, the department will visit the municipality on Wednesday to conduct their independent assessment and determine the appropriate assistance that can be provided to the affected families."

Shandu says municipal officials, including the mayor, have visited affected communities and pledged ongoing support to residents.

He says the municipality will assist families in whatever way they need, while long-term interventions are being considered.

In the meantime, disaster relief efforts remain underway, with the municipality distributing food parcels, groceries, blankets, and other essential items to households affected by the storms.
