Rape suspect falls to his death near Durban harbour

A rape suspect has plummeted six storeys to his death while trying to outrun police in Durban.

Police say the man - escaped from harbour police in the early hours of this morning while still handcuffed.
Spokesperson, Thembeka Mbhele says he ran into an open doorway on the 6th floor of a building in Albany Grove - not realising it was a lift shaft.
Mbhele says the man fell into the building's sub-basement.
"An inquest docket was opened at Durban Central today after a body was retrieved from an elevator shaft by Search and Rescue team members," Mbhele said.

The man had also been arrested for abduction. Police have provided no further details on the circumstances of his arrest.
