Ramaphosa, Mkhize lead ANC presidential race nominations

The African National Congress presidential race is on as Cyril Ramaphosa and Dr Zweli Mkhize have been named as frontrunners for the party's top job.

Ramaphosa is in the lead with just over 2 000 nominations, while Mkhize trails behind with 916.


ANC Electoral Committee head Kgalema Motlanthe announced the top six contenders on Tuesday, with under a month to the 55th ANC National Conference at Nasrec in Johannesburg.


He says current treasurer Paul Mashatile is the top nominee for the deputy presidency race, followed by Justice Minister Ronald Lamola and Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane.

"For the positions of national chairperson is Stanley Mathabatha and his tally is 1 492 and for Gwede Mantashe to total tally is 979. For David Masondo the total tally is 501."


Motlanthe also announced the nominations for secretary-general.


"Mdumiseni Ntuli the total tally is 1 225, for Phumulo Masualle the total is 889 and for Fikile Mabula the tally is 749."


Nomvula Mokonyane is leading the nominations for deputy secretary-general, followed by Febe Potgieter.
