Ramaphosa’s been briefing delegates attending the second national Higher Education Summit currently underway at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban.

The summit provides a platform to address the challenges facing the sector including barriers of entry, funding from both the public and private sector, curricula, staffing and institutional culture.

Ramaphosa says the notion that transformation comes at the cost of quality should be avoided.

''Transformation requires that we answer difficult questions about institutional culture and other mechanisms by which people are excluded or alienated.

''Sometimes institutional culture will say something like - this is not the culture of this university. As you look at it closely you find that it's an Anglo-Saxon culture in South Africa,'' he said.
