Fedsas says this is crucial to close the learning gaps due to Covid-19 and prevent academic loses going forward.

Jaco Deacon, who's with the governing body organisation, says many pupils aren't coping with the staggered approach to teaching which was introduced during the pandemic.

”Though there is provision for social distancing of one metre in schools, it doesn’t make sense if we allow for our extra-curricular activities to continue without masks, yet learners cannot sit next to one another without masks at school.”

Teachers' union Naptosa's Thirona Moodley says they support this move.

”We believe the learning losses can become insurmountable and will create huge gaps in the content knowledge of the learners. We believe that we are in a position to manage the pandemic in a way that will not disrupt schooling in the province or the country.

“The past two years have seen teachers and learners under immense amount of stress regarding catch-up programs and getting the curriculum done.”
