Public Protector sets aside millions to investigate alleged state capture

The Office of the Public Protector says the R1.5-million allocated to it for its investigation into alleged state capture will help its investigation into the Gupta family.

The Public Protector had originally requested an amount of R3-million.

Spokesperson Oupa Segalwe says the funding will strengthen key areas of the investigation.

"We want to use it to in-source external expertise particularly forensic skills because we haven't got those kind of skills internally. If you look at the scope of the investigation it requires such skills for us to make any headway," he said.

Meanwhile, today is the last day to lodge complaints or comment about Public Protector candidates.

The candidates were announced last month giving the public over a week to make submissions to the ad hoc committee tasked with finding a replacement for Thuli Madonsela whose term comes to an end in October.
